Sleep has been a choppy and elusive thing this week due to my messing up baby’s sleep on Sunday night and him retaliating by messing up mine on Monday and Tuesday nights. I forgot what it was like to get only 2.5 hours at a stretch. And now that I have to be at work on time (and up early enough to shower, dress me, dress him, and drop him off at daycare before I get to work on time so the day starts pretty early), I can’t go back to bed or catch several cat naps during the day when he wakes me up at midnight and 2:30am.
Isn’t sleep a crazy thing? Why is it so important for our well being to lay around for several hours at a stretch? Okay, I know there are many scientific reasons why sleep is beneficial, from the way our hormones work to our digestion, but in the grand scheme of things… why sleep? Why is one long sleep usually more beneficial than lots of little sleeps (though lots of little is better than none at all)? Why is sleep easier for some than others? Why is sleep sometimes so refreshing yet other times leaves me drained and dragging? Why do I drool in my sleep? = )
Sleep is truly a beautiful thing though, isn’t it? I watch Forrest sleeping sometimes and he’s a beautiful thing too. But I envy the little stinker his eyelashes…
May we all have happy sleep tonight!
(p.s. why are z’s used to signify sleep/snoring? I don’t think I make z-sounds when I snore, do you??)
