Forrest, you turned 5 months old on Monday? 5 months already? How..? What…? When…??! The time is flying, little boy.
You are a constant joy, a heart-broken-opener on a daily basis, and so incredibly frustrating sometimes I’m not sure what to do with myself. I usually end up giving you a big squeeze and getting a big smile in return and then all is right with the world again. You little stinker.
Last month we had a check up where the doctor told me you were a few ounces short of 14 lbs and grew just shy of 3 more inches. THREE! Umm, are you really going to be 6’5″ like your Grandpa? My scale says you’re over 14 lbs now but I haven’t had the guts to measure you – maybe you could stop growing quite so fast??
Over the past month you’ve once again discovered the joy of standing in our laps but you still have collapsible legs – that’s okay, we’re not quite ready for a walker yet (and not a lick of baby-proofing has been done around the house). You also LOVE the bouncy play station toy at school so Grandma got you one of your own for home. Isn’t she the best? There are days I can’t believe you have so much energy as you kick and squirm and wiggle and bounce and whew! Is this a preview of things to come? Mommy will never have to join a gym if so!
There are days when nursing you is STILL nearly impossible – everything catches your attention these days so sometimes we stop nursing and play some more until you’re hungry. Let’s not talk about the (lack of) sleep at night and Mom’s frazzled days, that could get ugly, but you did come through with a solid 8-hours for the first time in weeks on Sunday night when Mom was heaving up her guts with the 24-hour flu, so you have a pass on good sleep for a few more days. Such perfect timing, boy-o! And to think last month you slept for 10 hours one night. You tease, you!
It’s so very, very fun to make you smile and laugh my little man. You have the sweetest giggle, the sweetest gummy grin that lights up your face, and you’re still very generous with those smiles for the world and people around you. Giggles, on the other hand, can be harder to come by but I’m the first to admit I’m a raving loon sometimes if it will make you giggle: running around the couch waving my arms like a monkey while you stand in Dad’s lap? Yup, done that. Singing Do-wha-diddy over and over again while bopping my head back and forth? That too. Countless achoos! and chomps! and YAYs! and claps and neck-nibbles and tosses in the air? Oh yeah, mister. Dad’s usually right in the thick of it, too. Entertaining you is so entertaining.
Some days all you want is to be held and rocked (me too!), preferably in a standing position, and lo be the wrath that comes down if someone tries to lay you down to sleep! Other days, like yesterday morning, you’re perfectly content to play with your Tigger in the middle of the bed, or some rings or any number of chew toys, and often end up talking to your hands anyway. ‘Perfectly content to entertain yourself’ is an awesome skill to have, baby boy, you can believe we’ll help you nurture that one.
Christmas was great fun and you weathered festivities and tons of people like a champ – we haven’t even played with some of your new toys yet! And despite my desire to be asleep around 10:00 you decided we needed to ring in the New Year together…now that I think of it, you finally went to sleep at about 12:02am that night, too. Hmmmm, nifty timing, buddy.
In the near future you’ll be exploring the world of food, continuing to improve your sitting-up skills, enjoying more tummy time and rolling over more (finally rolled over for the first time on December 15th, yay!), growing and changing and continuing to be the best baby ever. EVER.
I love you so much, Forrest. Happy 5-month Birthday, sweetie!
