Happy Heart Day! As I was putting together Matt’s card this year I found myself waxing philosophical. Building this card was a lot like building the relationship…
Start with a good, solid, strong foundation. Something with staying power. No flash in the pan here.
Add a layer of yourself to the mix. This is one of my favorite papers ever. It doesn’t have to be perfect (and I love a rough, uneven edge), it doesn’t have to match perfectly. In the imperfections you’ll find the balance. And the excitement and wonder.
Add a layer of him. He’s solid, he’s the richness of brown – the chocolate, the earth, the stability – with that ornery twinkle in his brown eyes. Know he won’t remember this is a scrap from your wedding invitation, but you know and it makes you smile.
And now a layer with a bit of pizzazz, some shine and sparkle. Again, it’s not perfectly square and even, because the jazz and sparkle and pizzazz in a relationship ebbs and flows and softens with time (but make sure it’s still there till the end!).
Finally the heart of the matter, the love and strength and staying power that holds it all together. The reminder. The knowledge that he holds my heart. Add that to the layers of texture and color and meaning below and you’ve built yourself one heck of a life together. In the first picture you’ll see I added our initials, the three of us, because now we’re three.
Happy Valentine’s Day, friends and family. May you build a strong and lasting relationship with the ones you love. Forgive. Hug. Kiss. Find compassion and patience and joy. LOVE.
