When my friend Linda first helped me set up my blog over three years ago, I chose the tagline “Gimme paper and I’ll make it pretty.” That line resides there at the top of my blog, right below Curly Girl Press, and I have to tell you:
I love paper. Love, love, LOVE.
I hoard paper. Paper, paper, paper! I have a hard time using my pretty papers, at least the large sheets. I flip through these sheets sometimes just for fun, and rediscover so many gems tucked away. When I have a yen to buy more paper I tell myself “you have a fortune in pretty papers at home, you don’t need that (those) sheet(s),” but then that other voice says “of course you do! It’s pretty! It’s on sale! You don’t have that print/color/style yet!” My friends give me giftcards to the pretty paper store, my family gives me paper for gifts – they contribute to my hoarding and I love them for it.
I love playing with little scraps and have a hard time discarding any. I love to make homemade greeting cards and fold origami cranes. I’ve been dabbling with layered collages of paper and other elements (and have SUCH plans to work bigger someday, when I can bear to use those big gorgeous sheets…). I have tubs of paper, large portfolios of paper, bits and bobs of paper, and still prefer a written list to any digital option. I love how paper feels, the different textures in the handmade sheets and the different smoothness’ found in machine-made sheets. I love paper with sheen and sparkle and inclusions, pretty printed patterns, deckled edges, crisp corners, wrinkles, uneven cuts, imperfections and pristine white perfections.
I love the smell of paper (and glue, bindings, etc.) in an old bookstore. I love books!! I love making books out of pretty paper!! Heck, I have a degree in fine arts, specifically in Printmaking (which is why I’m currently an office manager, of course!), and that’s a paper love I would LOVE to get back into for sure.
My studio is a fire hazard for the paper alone. When I was deciding what to pack away to make room for the nursery (in the studio), I knew before anything else I wanted access to all the paper…
I am SO not along in my paper passion. In fact I’m part of a gang today and we’re one mean group of paper lovers! Check us out – I dare you. = )
