My iPhone and I have been photo buddies for a while and I’ve been mostly impressed with the camera, except for the lack of macro capabilities. So when A Beautiful Mess reviewed some iPhone lens choices, I jumped on it – $9.00 for three lenses, including a macro? Count me in! (And they were available with free shipping when I ordered, AND they came in just a few days. Score!)
My time has not been my own lately so I haven’t played with them yet in the wild but I did a quick photo shoot at my desk on my afternoon break. I give you Ode to an Apple (please forgive the less than glamorous surroundings. I work in an engineering office and can’t claim to be the neatest freak out there…):
Fish-eye lens from same location as those above. And since I took this the next day because I forgot the first day in my excitement over the macro lens, I’m super-impressed with myself for getting the placement of the apple right… but not impressed that I still had the apple on my desk in the first place… = )
Macro!! This is one I’ll play with a lot. I thought it was wonky at first because I unscrewed the wide angle to get to the macro, and all I saw was this crazy blur. So I moved closer and closer and closer until pop! Wowsa. My Sony digital camera, my usual go-to for macro, doesn’t even get this close (though the quality is a bit better). But for my uses, playing with textures and extreme abstract closeups, this will do just fine, thank you.
On a practical note, the lenses attach by magnet to a ring you stick around the camera opening on the back of the phone. Mine kept pulling off when I changed lenses, which was annoying, but may be because greasy fingers are not the best way to clean the phone before applying an adhesive item. The lenses came with several little rings so I’ll clean properly and apply a new one soon – it’s small enough to fit under the camera case, too.
For those serious photogs out there, I’m not sure a $9.00 set of magnetic-attachment lenses will float your boat, but this chicky is more than happy to have some new toys to play with.
